RockDocs: Athens Picture Show - Presented by Cine
Wednesday, June 18 • Cine • Times Below
FREE with AthFest wristband / $5 without
A showcase of highlights and previews for new productions by Athens filmmakers followed by
a colorful collection of vintage footage and rare performances from Athens' storied music
past including:
- THE B52'S: LIVE AT THE DOWNTOWN CAFE
(1978, Digital, 33min, Dir: Kelly Mills, NR) This revelatory concert film captures Athens' own seminal New Wave band taking full flight during a rollicking club show in Atlanta 1978.
Originally shot and edited by Georgia State University students for the school's CCTV system,
bootlegged copies of this original master tape have circulated out of the school's archives in
recent years and leaked onto the internet. Easy to see why, as the B-52's rip through a sevensong
set of classic tunes from its first two LPs, including a raw, punk-ish 'Rock Lobster.' SHOWTIMES: 7:00 & 10:30 p.m.
Plus:
- R.E.M. at Stitchcraft 1985 (excerpt from film Just Like A Movie by Laura Levine)
- Pylon & Love Tractor at Mad Hatter 1984 (Pylon's first "last show")
- The Side Effects at Tyrone's OC 1980
- ATHENS, GA INSIDE-OUT
(1987, Digital, 120min, Dir: Tony Gayton, NR) Led by the success of the B-52's and R.E.M., Athens, Georgia was the most happening music scene in the country by the mid 80's.
Following several different bands from different genres, this film paints Athens as a magical
artistic environment where bands are not in competition, but co-exist in harmony. Live
performances of R.E.M.'s "Swan Swan H" and "Dream (All I Have To Do)" at the Lucy Cobb
Institute Chapel are included. Also featured are performances from and interviews with R.E.M.,
the B-52's, Pylon, B-B-Que Killers, Time Toy, Jim Herbert, Flat Duo Jets, Love Tractor, Kilkenny
Cats, the Squalls, folk artist Reverend Howard Finster and others.
SHOWTIMES: 8:00 p.m. - followed by a panel discussion and live performances with Ort Carlton,
Bob and Vanessa Hay, Paul Butchart, Dexter Romweber, and more. Special performance by Dexter Romweber. Details @

RockDocs: Let's Get Lost - Presented by Cine
Wednesday, June 18 & Thursday, June 19 • Cine
$6 with AthFest wristband / $8 without
(1988, 35mm, 120min, Dir: Bruce Weber, NR) Newly restored 35mm print of the 1988 documentary on the
turbulent life and career of jazz trumpeter and drug addict Chet Baker, that traces his career from the
1950s, when he was in his prime, playing with jazz greats like Charlie Parker and Gerry Mulligan, to the
1980s, when he had become a skid row junkie unable to get a decent gig. By juxtaposing these two
decades, Weber presents a sharp contrast between the younger, handsome Baker — the statuesque
idol who resembled a mix of James Dean and Jack Kerouac — to what he became, “a seamy looking
drugstore cowboy-cum-derelict,” as J. Hoberman put it in his Village Voice review. Beginning near the
end of Baker’s life, on the beaches of Santa Monica, and ending at the Cannes Film Festival, LET'S GET
LOST bookends moments in the present with historic footage ranging from vintage photographs by
William Claxton in 1953 to appearances on The Steve Allen Show and kitschy, low budget Italian films
Baker did for quick money. (www.filmforum.org/films/letsgetlost.html.com)
SHOWTIMES: 4:15 p.m. (6/18) / 7:15 & 9:30 p.m. (6/19)

RockDocs: Ballad of the West w/ Bobby Bridger / Western Matinee - Presented by Cine
Thursday, June 19 • Cine

Bridger began work on his epic trilogy A Ballad of the West over four decades ago. Since 1974

American West. (www.bobbybridger.com)
SHOWTIMES: 7:00 & 9:30 p.m.
- Also: WESTERN MATINEE: JEREMIAH JOHNSON
(USA 1972, Digital, 108min, Dir: Sydney Pollack, PG) Set in the mid-19th century, after the Civil War, Sydney Pollack's picturesque film centers on the story of Jeremiah, (Robert Redford) an ex-soldier disillusioned with the ways of his civilization
and the ravages of war, who sets out determined to survive in the Rocky Mountain wilderness
by himself. With a strong but unglamorous performance by Redford, the film questions white
colonialism while mythologizing the man of nature and the heroism of survival. Spectacularly
shot on location in Utah, the film captures both the appeal and the challenge of the
wilderness landscape.
