AthFest 2011 Gets Smart – iPhone App Info

Author: Marisa Negri

AthFest is an Athens-based annual music and arts festival featuring local bands, solo musicians, varied artistry vendors, comics, indie films, and children’s events. AthFest has always been a wonderful event loved by all. In its 15th year, the festival gets even better, with the recent release of the AthFest App smart phone application.

The AthFest App simplifies the festival and all of its greatness right in the palm of your hand. And hey, the developers even included a lighter flame for users to hold up during night shows. Why not?

The app is compatible with the Apple iPhone, iPhone Touch, and iPad and was designed by four University students in the New Media Institute Capstone class of the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. The AthFest App was developed this past spring semester by mass media arts major Matt Evans, advertising majors Marisa Negri and Jessica Severens, and sociology major David Cherof in collaboration with Athfest Inc, the UGA New Media Institute, and Phazr Design.

Laughfest 2011 – The 2nd Annual Athfest Comedy Showcase

“Laughfest”, the official Athfest Comedy Showcase continues in 2011 with a new venue and a heavier hitting lineup. This year’s showcase will take place at the 40 Watt Club on June 22 nd, 2011 at 8 PM, and will feature nationally touring headliner Dan Telfer. Starting as an improviser at Chicago’s IO Theater when he was 18, Dan spent the next several years doing long-form improv, writing high-concept political-mythology plays with Theater Oobleck, and doing solo performance at the Live Bait Theater. Eventually throwing these hats all into the stand-up ring, Dan spins whimsical flights of fancy with stories from his quirky life. He became a fixture of Chicago’s Lakeshore Theater, where he opened for Paul F. Tompkins, Patton Oswalt, Janeane Garofalo, and many more until he was booked as a headliner himself. Maria Bamford and Brian Posehn went on to take Dan on the road as their featured opener.

Paste Magazine dubbed him the “Best of What’s Next” and went on to also list him as one of the 10 Best Comedians of 2010. In April of 2010 Dan was featured on the front page of The Onion, who said Dan was “hitting Chicago’s comedy glass ceiling. Dan is currently touring to promote a new podcast for the Onion AV Club. Dan featured at both of the Patton Oswalt shows at the 40 Watt Club on March 29th and 30th, 2011.

This show will also feature TJ Young, a member of The Beards of Comedy Tour and creator of Mundanish Comedy. TJ is a 2008 Aspen Rooftop Comedy Awards winner. TJ has shared the stage with such notable acts as Aziz Ansari, Doug Benson, Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Greg Giraldo, and Maria Bamford.

Chris Patton, Natalie Glaser, Matt Gilbert, Luke Fields, and Drew Dickerson will also perform.

Chris is the creator of Merj, and has opened for Brian Posehn and Patton Oswalt. Other notable credits include Laughfest 2010, and hosting the Flagpole Music awards in 2010.

Natalie is a former public defender and has performed with such notable acts as Maria Bamford and Bobcat Goldthwait.

Matt Gilbert is a local comedian and creator of “Drafts and Laughs” a monthly show at Gameday Pub. Matt has opened for Doug Stanhope and Dave Waite.

Luke Fields is the creator of “Hacks”, a monthly comedy show that runs at Caledonia Lounge. Luke has opened for Doug Stanhope, Adam Newman and Kyle Kinane.

Drew Dickerson is a local comic, and a student at the University of Georgia.

Laughfest 2011 will cost $10 at the door, or $5 with an Athfest wristband.

AthFest Educates! donates instruments to the UGA String Project

The Athfest Educates! Program was created as an extension of AthFest’s mission of providing music and arts education. This program provides several different services including lunchtime performances that reach every student in a school, classroom enrichment performances which can support the standards, interactive musical performances in after school programs, community centers, home schools and summer camps, and support during educational enrichment clusters during the school day. During this school year AthFest Educates! Programs enhanced the learning experiences of over 7000 students in Athens and the surrounding areas.

AthFest Educates! also furnishes new and refurbished instruments and supplies to students in need through on-going fund-raising and instrument drives. During 2011 AthFest Educates! purchased violins, violas, and cellos and donated them to the UGA String Project in order to establish a permanent lending library. The UGA String Project supports music education on many levels. Participants include 2nd to 5th grade students who are learning orchestra instruments as well as college students who are earning credits toward their Orchestra Education degrees.

Participants in the UGA String Project are currently using instruments provided by AthFest. These students will be showcased at a performance at Hodgson Hall on May 2nd at 5 PM. They will also perform on the KidsFest stage at AthFest.

AthFest Educates! Programs are supported by continuous fundraising, which includes AthFest, the Athens Half Marathon, AthFEAST, grants, sale of autographed guitars, and benefit concerts. This year we were honored to have George Winston donate proceeds from a concert to AthFEAST Educates! Programs and to receive a grant from the Athens Area Community Foundation.

AthFest Educates! is currently working to expand their programs to include visual arts and will sponsor an art contest during KidsFest at AthFest this summer. Requests for support or to become involved can be submitted for consideration through our website http://athfest.com/education
